So, does Jesus send only the pure and perfect to us? What if Jesus sends Gene Robinson, in all his "sinfulness according to the scriptures", and the Lambeth bishops, through Rowan, refuse to receive him, and therefore refuse to receive God?
Judas was present at the footwashing, and presumably Jesus washed his feet, even though he says at the same time, that he, Jesus, is not speaking of all of those present when he tells them what they are to do. What are the implications for our everyday actions? Who do we receive? Are there those we are not to receive?
I think this: When we reject those we deem too sinful, and too unrepentent, we reject ourselves as well as God. Receive, therefore, everyone; wash everyone's feet. Leave the sorting to God.
